Storm Protection

Prevent Seasonal Storm Damage, Before it happens

Roofing might not be a sport but roofers would say that your best offense is a good defense. Storms are going to happen every year and Northern Colorado has seen many devastating storms in all seasons. Slaughter Roofing offers solutions for the repair and replacement of roofs but the best way to minimize damage, and cost, is preventative measures.

Types of Damage

There are many factors that go into determining if your roof has sustained storm damage. To determine if your roof has storm damage, Slaughter Roofing sends their professional inspectors to do a free inspection to assess any potential damage and if you have enough damage to file an insurance claim.

Hail Damage on Asphalt Shingles

When our roofing team inspects your roof, the main characteristics of hail damage to asphalt shingles that we are looking for include the following:

  • Random damage with a discernible pattern.

  • Hail hits that are black in color.

  • Loss of granule, which may expose roof felt.

  • Asphalt and/or mat that appears shiny

  • Hail hits that are soft to the touch.

  • Amount of hail hits on each slope of your home.

Wind Damage on Asphalt Shingles

Wind doesn't always move in discernible patterns and that is one reason why it can cause so much damage. It can hit your home and travel up to the roof with different pressure throughout each gust. This is called the “wind uplift pressure” and the areas on your roof most susceptible to this pressure are the corners of the roof line and the roof edges. Depending on how the wind moves across your roof it can create suction pressure and lift shingles away from the roofing deck.

Signs of wind damage:

  • Curled, torn, or raised shingles

  • Small lines around the edge of the shingles

  • Scratch marks across the roof

  • Cracked or gaping chimney flashing

  • Damaged ridge or soffit vents

Ice Dams

An ice dam is a ridge of ice that forms at the edge of a roof and prevents melting snow from draining properly off the roof. Ice dams typically form when heat from the interior of the building causes the snow on the roof to melt, and then the water refreezes as it runs down and reaches the colder roof edge or eaves. Over time, the ice can grow and cause significant damage to multiple components of your home, including:

  • Decking/Sheathing

  • Walls

  • Ceilings

  • Insulation

  • Foundation and Other structural areas
