Tips For Choosing A Quality Contractor

Stay away from ‘storm chasers’ and choose a local roofing contractor

Purchasing a new roof is a big investment. Whether you pay for your roof out of your own pocket or you have received an insurance settlement, it’s imperative that you take your time and do your homework before choosing a roofing contractor for your project.

No Solicitors

As a general rule, stay away from door-knockers and high-pressure sales tactics. This is where we see the problems begin for many homeowners. Door-to-door salespeople show up at your home as soon as a large storm occurs and the pressure is on. Many of the contracts these companies ask you to sign are illegal! Colorado passed a Residential Roofing Bill of Rights in 2012 called Senate Bill 38 that ensures your rights as a customer. Door-to-door roofing salespeople also may pressure you into filing a claim with your insurance when you do not need to. Slaughter Roofing is committed to informing you of your rights as a homeowner, and we will do our best to educate you on your needs, not push you into anything that is not necessary for the safety of your home.

Don't Sign Anything

If you are asked to sign anything by a solicitor knocking on your door, don't sign it right away, and don't assume it is just an estimate or permission to get on your roof. The majority of the time it is a roofing contract and could include a 20% cancellation clause. If you signed a contract with a company and felt pressured or were unaware of what you were signing — you have rights, and Colorado Senate Bill 38 outlines the rescission process.

Investigate

When deciding which contractor is right for your job, be sure to do your research. Check what previous customers have said on their Google reviews; Look up their Better Business Bureau (BBB) profile; Make sure that they are a member of the Colorado Roofing Association (CRA),  and be sure to check for a permanent business address and phone number.  If your local roofing contractors have been established in your area these will be good indicators.

Protect Your Investment

A new roof is a major investment. From start to finish, use good common sense when selecting a roofing contractor to work on your home. Low bids can often mean someone is cutting corners to make a profit. Price should not be the sole determining factor when choosing a contractor. Determine your needs, don't allow yourself to be pressured, and you'll be pleased with your investment.
